Complete Uromastyx Care Guide

This guide covers everything you need to know about keeping uromastyx lizards healthy and happy in captivity. Written by experienced breeders and keepers with decades of combined experience.

Choosing Your Uromastyx

Popular beginner species include Mali and Saharan uromastyx due to their hardy nature and manageable adult size. Ornate and Egyptian uromastyx are excellent for experienced keepers who want larger, more colorful animals.

Enclosure Setup

Adults need a minimum 4x2x2 foot enclosure. Larger is always better. Use a screen top for airflow. Front-opening enclosures are ideal for reducing stress during feeding and maintenance. View our enclosure selection.

Heating

Create a temperature gradient with a basking spot of 120-130F on one end and a cool side of 85F. Use overhead basking bulbs (not heat mats) as uromastyx thermoregulate by basking. A ceramic heat emitter can maintain nighttime temps if needed. Shop heating equipment.

UVB Lighting

A T5 high-output UVB tube (10-14%) spanning two-thirds of the enclosure is essential. UVB enables proper calcium absorption and prevents metabolic bone disease. Replace tubes every 12 months. Browse our lighting options.

Diet & Nutrition

Feed a varied diet of dark leafy greens, seeds, and legumes. Staples include endive, escarole, dandelion greens, millet, and lentils. Avoid iceberg lettuce, spinach, and citrus fruits. Dust food with calcium 3-4 times weekly. See our food and supplements.

Substrate

Mix organic topsoil and play sand at a 70/30 ratio, packed firmly. This allows natural burrowing behavior while being safe for all ages. Spot-clean daily and replace fully every 3-4 months. Find the right substrate here.

Enrichment

Add basking rocks, cork bark hides, and occasional rearrangement to keep your uromastyx stimulated. Explore our decor and hides for enrichment ideas.

Health Signs

A healthy uromastyx is alert, has clear eyes, eats regularly, and basks actively. Warning signs include lethargy, sunken eyes, MBD tremors, and loss of appetite. Maintain proper temperatures and UVB to prevent most health issues.
